Apply for Funding!

One of ESG's core responsibilities is supporting student organizations and student-led initiatives within the College of Engineering. Each semester, ESG allocates funding to help organizations host events, purchase supplies, support professional development opportunities, and create meaningful experiences for engineering students.

Funding at a Glance

Who Can Apply?
Any student organization or student-led initiative with a clear impact on University of Michigan students. Priority is generally given to initiatives that benefit the Michigan Engineering Community.

What Does ESG Fund?
ESG supports a wide range of academic, professional, cultural, service, and wellness initiatives. Examples include educational programming, community-building events, conferences, competitions, diversity and cultural initiatives, and projects that positively represent the College of Engineering.

How Much Can I Request?
Organizations and individuals may receive up to $5,000 in total ESG funding per semester, though funding is awarded on a case-by-case basis and is not guaranteed.

When Should I Apply?
Applications must be submitted at least three weeks before the event or initiative date.

What Makes a Strong Application?
The strongest applications clearly explain their goals, anticipated impact, intended use of funds, and benefit to the engineering community. Applications should be specific, well-organized, and demonstrate thoughtful planning.

What Doesn't ESG Fund?
ESG does not fund political campaigns, startups or business ventures, charitable donations, scholarships or stipends, alcohol or other drugs, or reimbursements for expenses incurred before an application is submitted. Please review the Funding Guidelines for a complete list of restrictions.

How The Process Works

1. Review the Funding Guidelines

Before applying, carefully review:

  1. The information on this page - It updates frequently with announcements, useful information, and timing-specific application rules, so check back often.

  2. ESG's Funding Guidelines - The Funding Guidelines outline ESG's funding policies, eligibility requirements, funding priorities, and spending restrictions.

  3. The Sample budget - Review the sample budget to understand the level of detail and quality expected in your application. A blank budget template is also available for organizations preparing their submissions.

2. Submit Your Application

Complete the funding application and provide a detailed budget explaining your anticipated expenses. If you are an individual, please see below for additional instructions. If you are representing a student organization, apply HERE. Make sure to read the additional instructions at the top of the form and within the questions.

3. Funding Committee Review and Decision

After submission, your application will be reviewed by the ESG Funding Committee. Committee members evaluate requests based on factors such as impact, alignment with ESG funding priorities, demonstrated need, and the overall quality of the application. Funding decisions may result in a full award, partial award, or denial.

5. Hold Your Event

Carry out your approved event or initiative and retain all required documentation.

6. Submit Reimbursement Materials

Submit receipts and any required documentation to receive reimbursement.

Current Announcements

This semester we have $30,000 of funds to disperse! This may be a lot, however we receive over fifty funding applications each semester. Please recognize that ESG may not be able to meet your funding need. In addition to applying with us, we recommend seeking funds from CoE or Central Student Government, or fundraising yourself. If you are unsure of the best way to proceed, feel free to email esg.treasurer@umich.edu.
